Encrypt your telnet and FTP terminal applications

Telnet and FTP terminal applications are vulnerable because they transfer information in a plain text format. A vulnerability like this can put your data in danger of being intercepted by someone with bad intentions. Follow the directions below to prevent this form happening.

Telnet Terminal Applications

  • Usually used for the e-mail program Pine or web page modification
  • Upgrade your current telnet terminal application with SecureMac .

Macintosh OS X (10.3 and above)

  1. Installing and using SecureMac instructions
     
  2. Download the SecureMac installer.

FTP Terminal Applications

  • FTP stands for File Transfer Protocol
  • Fetch 5.2 will be used to FTP
  • Fetch 5.2 is packaged with ITS's SecureMac installer.
  • You will use Kerberos via Fetch 5.2 to connect to the ITS server
  • Kerberos is a network authentication tool that is packaged with SecureMac.

Macintosh OS X (10.3 and above)

  1. Read through and refer to the instructions for connecting to FTP via Kerberos using Fetch 5.2 before and after downloading the SecureMac installer below.
  2. Download the SecureMac installer (Fetch is included).

Web Publishing Clients

  • People who use programs like Dreamweaver and Netscape Composer to create and publish web pages.
  • Download and use a "tunnel" to make your connections to ITS servers secure, while still being able to use your program's publish or FTP tool.
