CUantivirus Frequently Asked QuestionsThis FAQ is broken down into four sections:
General CUantivirus (eTrust) questions and answers Who can download the eTrust software? Only CU-Boulder affiliates can download and use this software. You may need your CU Login Name and IdentiKey password to download the software. What operating systems can I install CUantivirus (eTrust) on? You may install CUantivirus (eTrust) on Windows XP, Windows Vista, MacOS 10.4 and above, Linux, and Solaris 8. How do I download and install the software? Go to the Software Downloads section on www.colorado.edu/its/security/antivirus. Click on the link that is appropriate for you operating system. The page that will open will have the software you can download along with instructions on installing the software. I keep hearing about CUantivirus and eTrust, what is the relationship between the two? CUantivirus is the branded name for CU-Boulder's antivirus program. eTrust is the antivirus application that CUantivirus uses. It is made by Computer Associates. Why do I need to uninstall my old antivirus software? Running a second antivirus program can cause conflicts with eTrust and can in some cases cause your computer to crash. Do I have to use CUantivirus (eTrust)? No. However, CUantivirus (eTrust) is provided to you at no cost. If you wish to purchase an antivirus program instead of using the one provided to the campus, you may. Why does eTrust make my computer run slow? Some systems contain files that corrupt the eTrust installation. Often if you uninstall and reinstall the program, eTrust will run correctly. How often should I update the CUantivirus software? CUantivirus automatically checks for antivirus engine updates when virus definitions are updated. If a new installation of the CUantivirus software is required, ITS will notify campus via an administrative E-Memo when a new installation package is available. How often should I perform a manual scan of my computer? By default, virus definition files are being updated daily, and the real-time scanner running at all times. If you have not changed these settings, you should only need to perform a manual scan once you have installed the CUantivirus software to verify that your system is virus-free. After the first scan, the real-time monitor should be examining all files that enter your computer, and innoculate or rename infected files. I forgot to uninstall my old antivirus program and now my Windows OS shows a blue screen when it boots. What can I do? Please call the IT Service Center for assistance at 303-735-4357 (5-HELP from an on-campus phone). My realtime monitor found a virus! What should I do? If the realtime monitor has found a virus, it has most likely cured the infected file or quarantined the file. You can visit the Daily Use Tips page for more information. I would like to perform a manual scan of my hard drive. How do I do this? Instructions for performing manual scans can be found in the Daily Use Tips page. How do I know if realtime monitoring is working on my Windows OS? You should be able to see the eTrust Icon in the Windows System Tray. For more information on this please see the Daily Use Tips page. How do I uninstall CUantivirus for Windows? Use the Add/Remove programs Control Panel to remove "CUantivirus" or "CA eTrust Antivirus by CU Boulder". Macintosh questions and answers How do I start scanning my files and folders? To learn how to start scanning for viruses and worms, click here. How does CUantivirus (eTrust) handle a virus or infected file when it finds one? CUantivirus (eTrust) will try to cure the infected file. Linux/Solaris questions and answers How do you access the management console? The management console requires a web server. If the web server is functioning connect to http://localhost/INO to load the console. Why would I run CUantivirus on Linux or Solaris? Worms have targeted UNIX based systems in the past and CUantivirus will provide additional protection from these attacks. Additionally, many UNIX based systems provide file services to Windows clients via the Samba server. CUantivirus (eTrust) will help protect other users by detecting infected files which may be stored by Windows clients. Will the CUantivirus (eTrust) client protect Solaris or Linux email servers? The CUantivirus client does not interface with sendmail (the common UNIX mail transfer agent). Computer Associates does provide a linux gateway product which will interface with sendmail but is not supported by ITS at this time. Get HelpIT Service Center |
