Students—Internet connectivity

>>Connecting a computer or smartphone to the wireless network
>>Connecting a computer to the wired network
>>Connecting a gaming system or alternative device to the wired or wireless network

Which technology you should use to connect:

Location

Network Technology

Residence Halls
Family Housing
Bear Creek

Wired high-speed Internet (Ethernet jack on the wall in the room or residence).

College Inn & Athens North
Residence Halls (except Smith)
Bear Creek

UCB Wireless (802.11 b/g)

Non-residential areas on campus (like the UMC)

UCB Wireless (802.11 b/g)
ITS Computing Labs
Computer Kiosks (iMacs)

The way you connect to the Internet depends on where you are living.

In residence halls and university apartments (family housing and Bear Creek)

Connect your computer to the university network via ResNet Ethernet jacks. One jack per resident is installed in every residence hall room and Bear Creek residence, and one jack per family housing residence.

All residence halls, except for Smith Hall, have UCB Wireless.

In College Inn

Connect your computer to the wireless network. College Inn residences do not have wired networking, therefore your computer will need to have wireless capabilities.

Network Registration

Students living on campus and those using UCB Wireless have to register their computers and devices on the network. Here's how:

Living off campus

ITS does not have an Internet service for off campus residents. You are free to select a commercial broadband or dial-up service. We recommend you learn more about ITS's Virtual Private Network (VPN) program. This allows you to have an on campus connection to the libraries and other services from home.

UCB Wireless

ITS offers wireless network access in many of the public areas on campus, and in some residence hall areas. For more information about this wireless and how to use it go to www.colorado.edu/its/wireless

The use of wireless access points and routable Gateways in the residence halls and university apartments is strictly prohibited and action will be taken against those who violate this policy. All of the residence halls and university apartments (except for College Inn) have wired networking available in each room, which is faster and more secure than existing wireless network options.

Gaming Systems and Alternative Devices

All gaming systems and alternative devices that require Internet connectivity (wired and wireless) must be manually registered on the network. Go to www.colorado.edu/its/docs/networkinternet/gamingdevice.html to learn how.

Smartphones on UCB Wireless

Smartphones (such as iPhone and Windows Mobile devices) that have the ability to connect a wireless network will need to be registered. Go to www.colorado.edu/its/docs/connect.html to find instructions for iPhones and Windows Mobile. For those with other devices, follow the general instructions at www.colorado.edu/its/docs/networkinternet/gamingdevice.html.

CU-Boulder Firewall

Students living in the residence halls and university apartments (family housing and Bear Creek) have strengthened network security via the CU-Boulder firewall. When you register your computer on the CU-Boulder network, you are asked to accept the Residence Network (ResNet) Policy. The CU-Boulder firewall helps enforce the ResNet Policy. For more information about the CU-Boulder Firewall and how it affects you, click here.

Computer Security

Remember, when your computer is connected to the Internet it is vulnerable to Internet attacks, worms, and viruses. It is essential that you've installed all the updates to your operating system, and that you have a current anti-virus program loaded on your computer before connecting to the campus network. Please protect yourself by keeping your computer's anti-virus software up-to-date with any needed patches, and disabling file sharing. Also, setting up the auto-updates option on your computer is highly recommended. CU reserves the right to deny or revoke network access if your computer is compromised of found to be vulnerable. For more information on computer security and setting your computer to do auto-updates, go to www.colorado.edu/its/security.
