IT Support Community Event a Success
By Herb Wilson
The Spring IT Support Community Event was held on Friday, March 20, with the theme of How We Work Together. Within the context of this theme, we had a wonderful panel discussion on partnerships between departments, schools and colleges, and ITS. We heartily thank the following people for sharing their experiences in partnering with ITS: Ridawn Cummings, Director, Leeds Technology Services; Michele Jackson, Chair, Department of Communication and director of the ASSETT program; Sara McDonald, CSR, School of Education; Peter Schneider, Associate Dean, College of Architecture and Planning; and Derrick Watson, Director, Environmental Health & Safety.
The panel focused on the important roles of supporting desktops, helping faculty incorporate technology into teaching and research, supporting technology in classrooms, computing labs and conference rooms, supporting servers, and workflow. The panelists articulated that there is no one right choice and that each of their departments’ tailored selections of Desktop Support, DATC support, Educational Technology Support (ETS), Managed Services support for servers, and utilization of the IT Service center for workflow were based upon what was best for supporting their constituents. Another common theme was that communication and feedback are critical to the success of any partnership. Each area reflected that regular and ongoing meetings to review recent work, outstanding issues, upcoming activities, and any service-impacting events greatly contributed to the successful partnerships.
The number of desktops and laptops being managed through the desktop support groups is a critical measure of the success of these partnerships across the campus community. In fact, we are approaching 2,500 desktops and laptops being managed through our support groups. It is a tremendous vote of confidence in the services ITS provides that such a significant number of departments, schools and colleges entrust the care, maintenance and management of their computing systems to the Desktop Support Program.
We also welcome our newest partner: the Department of Civil, Environmental, and Architectural Engineering. CEAE is utilizing the services of the IT Service Center, Desktop Support, Educational Technology Support, and Managed Services.
