RedHat Site Server

Click here to learn about RedHat Enterprise Linux for End Users

All students, faculty and staff on the CU Boulder campus can take advantage of the RedHat site license purchased by the University. The site license entitles users to the software and updates for RedHat Enterprise Linux. By using the site license, you can ensure your RedHat Enterprise Linux systems are kept up-to-date with the latest security patches and software updates from RedHat. Furthermore, the updates will come from a local satellite server housed on CU-Boulder's network, so they will be fast and reliable.

Contact Us

If you require a login and system group on the satellite server, send the following information to trouble@satellite.colorado.edu (or phone 303-492-6096):
  • Department Name
  • Address
  • Phone Number
  • Names and e-mail addresses of all users who will need accounts on the Satellite Server to manage your systems. This is typically limited to only the system administrators.

You will receive a RedHat Satellite Server login name and password that allows you to log in and manage your subscribed systems, at http://satellite.colorado.edu. If you do not require a login, and merely need updates for your system(s), follow instructions for End User RedHat Registration.

Once you receive your username and password, it is IMPERATIVE that you login and change your password immediately (see next step). You will also receive an Activation Key which should be used with a bootstrap script to register your systems.

Changing Your RedHat Password

After you receive a username and password, you will be able to log into http://satellite.colorado.edu/. After signing in for the first time, be sure to change your password immediately. Click on "Your Account" located on the left menu bar, then enter a new password, twice.

Register for Automatic Updates

You are now ready to register your system(s) to the CU-Boulder RedHat Satellite server. This enables them to download patches and security updates automatically via up2date, ensuring that they are kept safe and secure. Here is how to subscribe a system, depending on whether RedHat is already installed or whether you are just now installing. (You can download RedHat ISO images to burn to CDs, for use with installation.)

Case 1: If you are installing RHEL4.

  • Install RedHat Linux as you normally would.
  • On the first reboot after the installation is complete, a Red Hat Login screen will appear. At this screen, check "Tell me why I need to register and provide a Red Hat Login" and click Next.
  • On the next screen, check "I can not complete registration at this time. Remind me Later."
  • Click Next.
  • Complete the rest of the firstboot menu screens as you normally would.
  • Now proceed with the instructions for Case 3, below.

Case 2: If you are installing RHEL5.

  • Install RedHat Linux as you normally would.
  • On the first reboot after the installation is complete, as you go through the dialogues, a window entitled "Set Up Software Updates" will come up. Click on "No, I prefer to register at a later time." Then click "Forward"
  • Another dialogue will open saying, "Are you sure you don't want to connect your system to Red Hat Network?" Click "No thanks, I'll connect later."
  • At the next screen, which says "Finish Updates Setup" just click "Forward".
  • Follow the rest of the steps on firstboot.
  • Now proceed with the instructions for Case 3, below.

Case 3: RedHat Linux is already installed.

  • Open up a browser and save this file: http://satellite.colorado.edu/pub/bootstrap/bootstrap.sh
  • Edit this bootstrap.sh file with your favorite editor and do the following:
    • Comment out the echo block (lines beginning with the word echo) along with the line right after this block which reads exit 1.
    • Find the line beginning with ACTIVATION_KEYS= and enter the ACTIVATION KEY you received here
  • Save the file and exit from your editor.
  • Open up a terminal window and run the bootstrap.sh script as root with the command /bin/sh ./bootstrap.sh
  • If asked if you wish to install the GPG public key, click Yes.
  • Your system is now registered with the CU-Boulder RedHat Satellite server. You may manage your subscribed systems by visiting http://satellite.colorado.edu.
