Web site creation: A step-by-step guide to creating personal web pages at UCB

Note: Faculty and Staff members that want to create an academic (course or departmental) web page need to visit www.colorado.edu/its/webservices for procedures, information, and services such as WebCT. This guide is for creating personal web pags and is geared primarily toward students. However, some of the information in this guide can be helpful for all UCB affiliates.

Introduction

You can create a personal web site using your CU computing account. Students create web sites for various reasons, such as a medium for self-expression, posting resumes, and just for fun. This guide will take you step-by-step through the process of creating your web account and creating the pages to fill it.

Having a web site involves responsibilities that are outlined below in Section 5. Guidelines for web pages at UCB. A web site is a personal representation of you, so keep in mind that your web site is on the World Wide Web and can be viewed by anyone.

This guide covers:

  1. Students | How to Get Started: Your Web Account and index.html
  2. Faculty/Staff | How to Get Started: Using your E-mail Account and the mkhomepage Command
  3. How to Make Web Pages: Creating, Developing, and Previewing Web Page Files
  4. How to Put Your Web Site on the WWW: Publishing (FTP your web pages into public_html)
  5. How to Make More Out of Your Web Site: Advanced Web Page Development
  6. Guidelines for Web Pages at UCB: Responsibilities and Style
  7. Troubleshooting
  8. How to Get Help
