ITS Help Documents >> IT Security >> Private Data Software >> Installing Spider Software

Overview

Spider is an application written at Cornell University for the specific purpose of searching computers for sensitive data.  Spider searches through the content of all files looking for matches to the criteria it is given.  With the permission of Cornell, ITS has repackaged and redistributed Spider with a custom default configuration.  This document demonstrates how to install Spider.

1. Download Cornell University's Spider software by clicking on the file name: Spider2.9.5.msi

2. To start the installation double-click on the Spider icon, as shown below:

3. The InstallShield Wizard will open. Click on the Next button to begin.

4. The next window that opens, allows you to choose your destination folder for installation. If you want to change the destination of your installation, click on the Change button. Otherwise, click on the Next button.

5.  The Spider software installation will take place, which may take several moments.

6.  Once installation is done, the InstallShield Wizard Completed window will open. Click Finish to exit the wizard.

7. You are now able to run Spider software. To open Spider, click on the Start menu and select All Programs, then Cornell Spider , and finally the Spider application.
