Computer Security Awareness

Security Topics
Click on the link above to learn about a wide range of IT Security topics, including Phishing, Identity Theft, and VPN.
CUantivirus
Antivirus software, an important security tool that helps keep computers and vital information safe from the daily deluge of viruses and worms, is now available at no cost to all CU-Boulder faculty, staff, and students.
Anti-Spyware
Spyware is unwanted software that attaches itself to your computer, often without your knowledge, when you surf the web. It spies on you, and when it does, it noticeably bogs down and can crash your computer. Spyware can even compromise your identity.

Private Data Search Software (Spider, SENF)
Download and use software that has the specific purpose of searching computers for sensitive data.  Spider and SENF searches through the content of all files looking for matches to the criteria it is given.

Host-based Intrusion Detection Software (HIDS)
Host-based intrusion detection software is required on all private data servers and recommended for all Internet facing servers. ITS recommends Tripwire Enterprise or OSSEC.
Configuring Windows for Auto-update
ITS asks the campus community to ensure that their Microsoft Windows computers are updated. Microsoft Windows can automatically check for and download updates for you. Learn how to setup Auto-update.
Configuring Macintosh for Auto-update
ITS asks the campus community to ensure that their Macintosh computers are updated. Macintosh can automatically check for and download updates for you. Learn how to setup Auto-update.
Running Windows Update
ITS asks the campus community to ensure that their Microsoft Windows computers are updated. Learn how to do this before your computer gets damaged or shut off from the network.
Use secure clients (Mac and Windows) that will encrypt your password and sensitive data
Many network applications such as Telnet or FTP send your password and other data (for example Student ID Numbers or ACARD numbers) in "clear text" over the network. This means the data is vulnerable to being seen by someone intent on eavesdropping your network communication. To prevent this from happening, ITS has put in place secure client software that will encrypt data that is to be sent over the network.
Internet Explorer 7 — Enabling the Phishing Filter
Internet Explorer 7 has a Phishing Filter to help avoid dangerous web sites. ITS strongly recommends all CU-Boulder affiliates who use Internet Explorer 7 enable the Phishing Filter. These instructions demonstrate how to enable the Phishing Filter.
