Updating Scanner Definitions (Signature Updates)

Updating scanner definitions is a very important part of keeping your computer safe from viruses and worms. This process will keep your scanner up-to-date, so it will be able to detect the most recent virus or worm.

To configure CUantivirus (eTrust) signature updates

1. To Make sure your virus definitions are up-to-date, click on Scanner, then on the Signature Update Options menu item.

2. In the Signature Update Options window, click Download Now and it will download the most current virus definition file, as shown below:

Using the Realtime Monitor

The CUantivirus (eTrust) Realtime Monitor will be scanning for viruses while it is active. The Realtime Monitor icon will display in the system tray when the software is running, as shown below:

When a virus is found you will receive a pop-up dialogue box which will provide the location of the file and what was done with the virus.

Realtime Monitor - critcal information

It is not advised that you ever disable the realtime monitor. The realtime monitor is your primary defense for stopping a virus before it can harm your computer. If you need to disable the realtime monitor, click here for more information.

Adding Folders to My Folders, for Scanning

With CUantivirus, you can configure the software to scan folders and files that you specify. To scan only specific folders and not your entire computer, you will have to add each folder to a section called My Folders. This listing will be stored for later use.

Alternatively to the My Folders listing, you can set folders you want to scan for a single manual scan. To select the folders you want to scan:

Scheduling a Monthly Scan

While CUantivirus eTrust has a Realtime Monitor, it is sometimes advisable to schedule a manual scan. A scheduled scan will run whenever you set the time for it, and will scan whatever folders you select. The instructions below will demonstrate how to setup a basic monthly scan:

1. First open up eTrust Antivirus from the start menu. Click the Start menu then All Programs then Computer Associates then eTrust then eTrust Antivirus then eTrust Antivirus.

2. You should now have an open window similar to the one shown below. By selecting the checkboxes on the left you select what you want to setup for your scan. For most users selecting the checkbox to the left of Local Disk (C:) will be sufficient as it will scan your entire hard drive. If you have additional partitions there may be other Local Disks that you may wish to select as well.

If you would like to only scan specific folders then navigate the hard drive by clicking the plus signs to the left of the folders you wish to navigate and then select the checkbox next to the specific folders you would like to scan.

3. To begin settings up our scheduled scan now click the Scanner menu at the top of your eTrust Antivirus window and then click Scheduled Scan Job then click Create.

4. Now you have a new window where you will setup our settings for our scheduled job. Under the description tab you can put in the name for your scheduled scan. Type Monthly Job in for the description. You can name your scheduled scan anything you like.

5. Now select the Schedule tab. This is where you will setup the time you want your monthly scan to occur. First select a date you would like the first scan to occur then select a time. Under the Repeat Every options use 1 for Months. The example below for instance is setup to scan first on September 20, 2004 at 8:00 AM. After it runs this scan it will run monthly on the 20th of every month.

With these basic settings set you can now create the job clicking Modify.

6. If you want to verify that the scheduled job was created then you look at the scheduled job under Scheduled Jobs in the main eTrust Antivirus window.

Feel free to create your own jobs to your own preferences.
