Updating Scanner Definitions

Updating scanner definitions is a very important part of keeping your computer safe from viruses and worms. This process will keep your scanner up-to-date, so it will be able to detect the most recent virus or worm.

1. To make sure your virus definitions (also called virus signatures) are up-to-date, click on the Scanner drop down menu, then select Signature Update Options.

2. In the Signature Update Options window, click Download Now and it will download the most current virus definition file, as shown below:

3. You can customize a schedule to download virus definitions automatically. By default it is configured for you to download everyday at 9:00p.m. You can change this schedule by entering in the appropriate time. Also you can change how often it downloads virus definitions, as shown below:

Adding Folders to My Folders, for Scanning

With CUantivirus, you can configure the software to scan folders and files that you specify. To scan only specific folders and not your entire computer, you will have to add each folder to a section called My Folders.

To add Folders to the My Folders section:

1. In the left window pane you will see My Computer and My Folders.

2. To find folders on your computer that you would like to add to the My Folders section, click on the arrow next to Root directory, as shown below:

3. A list of folders will appear.

4. You can add any of these folders to My Folders by right clicking on the folder you would like to add.

5. When you right click, a menu will appear. Click on Add to My Folder, as shown below:

6. It will add the selected folder to My Folders.

Selecting Files and Folders to Scan from My Folders

To select a specific folder or set of folders to scan from My Folders, follow these steps:

1. In the left window pane, double click on the folders you want to scan.

2. The program will put a red checkmark on the folder that was selected, as shown below:

To select specific files or folders within a folder, but not the entire folder, follow these steps:

1. Double click on the files or folders you want to scan.

2. As illustrated below, if you want to scan "Matlab project," and "SAS project," but not "Mathmatica," you will see red check marks on those folders, and a black check mark on the folder it is in, indicating in this example that "work files," is a partially selected folder.

Scanning Your Selected Folders or Entire Computer

1. To start scanning for viruses or worms, click the Scanner drop down menu, and select Start Scanning.

The scanning process will vary in time depending on what you have selected to be scanned.

2. If for some reason you need to stop the scan, click on the Scanner drop down menu and select Stop Scanning, as shown below:

Displaying CUantivirus (eTrust) scan results (what files are infected)

1. Click on the View drop down menu and select Log Viewer..

2. In the window that opens, click on Local Scanner in the left pane.

3. Affected files are identified by a yellow exclamation mark. Click on the yellow exclamation mark to find detailed information about the infected file, as shown below:

The other viewable logs:

  • If you selected CUantivirus (eTrust) Antivirus to start up at boot time, than Realtime Scanner will log information when the computer boots if files are infected by a virus.
  • Scheduled Scanner is a log of any scheduled scans you have set up.
  • General Events is a log of when CUantivirus purge old log files.
  • Click on Distribution Events to see the log of activity when virus definitions are downloaded. If there is a problem of downloading the virus definitions, it will show up with a red exclamation mark. For a more detailed view of what happened, click on the event and it will show you a more detailed description, as shown below:

Then...

How CUantivirus (eTrust) handles the virus when it finds one

eTrust will try to cure the infected file, if that doesn't work than it will rename the file by putting an .avb extension on the file name. At the end of the scan you will be able to see which files were affected by issuing a status report. The window that will open will show the infected file, as shown below:
