Creating a Spam Filter Rule in Leopard Mail |
|||||||||||||
| ITS has implemented a new way of marking spam messages. Potential spam or junk mail messages are flagged in the subject line of each message as POTENTIAL SPAM. This allows CU-Boulder e-mail users to filter spam and junk mail messages away from their inbox. For more information about ITS's effort against spam go to www.colorado.edu/its/email/spam.html Setting Up Leopards Junk Mail FilterLeopard mail has a special way of handling messages by directing particular e-mail messages into designate folders if you've set a rule to do so. This is particularly useful when setting up a junk mail folder. Mail that arrives through your CULink account sometimes has the tag "POTENTIAL SPAM" assigned to it by the University of Colorado at Boulder's spam-tagging service. These messages can be sent to a junk mail folder instead of your inbox by following the simple instructions designated below. 1. Open Leopard Mail. In the lower left-hand corner of the open window, click the + button. Choose New Mailbox… from the drop-down menu.
2. The New Mailbox window will appear. In the Name: text box, enter Potenial-SPAM for a name so that you will know that this is where the Potential Spam has been saved to. Then click OK.
3. Next, choose the Mail menu from the top of the screen. Click Preferences… from the drop-down menu.
4. Click Rules from the menu buttons.
5. Click the Add Rule button.
6. Enter Spam in the Description: text field. Be sure that the drop-down menu reads all for If all of the following conditions are met:. Now, be sure that the conditions read Subject Contains POTENTIAL SPAM. Note that POTENTIAL SPAM needs to be in all caps so that the mailbox will appropriately select the potential spam that has been flagged by CULink.
7. Under Perform the following actions: open the drop-down menu next to Move Message to mailbox. Go to On My Mac and choose Potential-SPAM as the mailbox to filter the spam to.
8. Click OK when you are finished setting the above conditions.
9. Click the close button on the top left-hand corner of the window. Note: You should now be able to see the new rule for Spam appearing in the Rules window.
10. Leopard Mail also has a spam filtering program available to users. In order to have the mail messages Leopard thinks is spam as well delivered to your Potential-SPAM folder as well, follow the next two steps. Click on the Potential Spam folder under your CULINK account.
11. Click the Mailbox drop-down menu from the top of the screen. Next, click on the Use This Mailbox For menu, and click Junk from the options. This will now direct all mail that Leopard views as Junk to your Potential-SPAM folder. Note: Be sure to check this folder frequently for mail that might appear to be junk or spam, but is really valid e-mail!
