Eudora Spam Control Best Practices

This document is based on Eudora 7.0.1

Potential spam or junk mail messages are flagged in the subject line of each message as POTENTIAL SPAM. This allows CU-Boulder e-mail users to filter spam and junk mail messages away from their inbox. For more information about ITS's effort against spam go to www.colorado.edu/its/email/spam.html

Create A Spam Filter

1. To create a spam filter using Mozilla Eudora 7.0.1, click on the Tools drop-down menu and select Filters...

2. The Eudora [Filters] window will open. At the bottom of the Filters pane, click New, as shown below:

3. In the window that opens, check the Incoming check box. For the Header drop-down menu, select Subject. In the second drop-down menu, select contains, then type POTENTIAL SPAM. In the action sections select Junk from the drop-down menu, as shown below:

4. Select another tab and click Yes to save the filter settings.

Identify Senders That Are Not Spammers, Add Them to the Address Book

Identify the senders that are not junk mail senders to ensure that mail from specific users doesn't end up in your junk mail by adding them to your personal address book. To prevent senders in your address book form being tagged as potential spam, follow the instructions below:

1. Click on the Tools drop-down menu and select Options.

2. In the window that opens, in Junk and Address Books section check Mail isn't junk if sender is an address book checkbox.

3. Click OK.

Modify your email client to filter junk mail

The SpamWatch junk mail filter is only available for the paid version of Eudora.

1. To train Spamwatch, highlight the message, then select the Message drop-down menu and click Junk.

The message will be transferred into the Junk mailbox.  Similarly, if you have a message in your Junk mailbox that is not Junk, highlight the message, then use the Not Junk command. The message will be transferred out of the Junk mailbox.  Regular training will improve your SpamWatch accuracy and performance.

Keep Your Address Book Up-To-Date

1. Ensure you use current (updated) e-mail addresses for recipients. Check the contents of your distribution lists and address books for accuracy.

Ensure your e-mail client is regularly patched with the latest updates and fixes.

2. Click on the Help drop-down menu, select Payment and Registration, and click Find the Latest Versions.
