Pine E-mail Program—Access the Campus Directory

ITS Help Documents >> ITS E-mail and Calendar Services Documentation >> ITS's Other E-mail Servers >> Pine E-mail Program >> Access the Campus Directory

Overview

Pine users can search the campus directory without having to go to the web and retype addresses or cut and paste. Setting up this feature is simple, and finding addresses becomes easy and quick once you do the configuration.

Configure Pine

1. Go to (m)ain, (s)etup, (d)irectory, and type 'a' to (a)dd a new
directory server.

2. With the first setting (ldap-server) highlighted, hit enter (or hit return), and then type the name of the campus directory server, exactly as it appears here:

directory.colorado.edu

And then hit enter (or hit return) to save it.

3. Move your cursor down to highlight the next setting, search-base, and hit enter (or hit return), so you can type:

dc=Colorado,dc=EDU

And then hit enter (or hit return). Do not put in any spaces, and be sure to include the comma and type everything else exactly as it appears in the example.

4. Finally, move down two lines to the nickname and hit enter (or hit return) . Then give your new directory a suitable name, such as "CU directory" to make it easy to recognize. Then hit enter (or hit return) to save this setting.

5. Now you can save all settings and exit directory setup. Type (e)xit and (y)es to save changes.

Search the CU Directory with Pine

Follow these steps to find and use a campus address while composing a message in Pine.

1. Type (c)ompose to start a new message. With your cursor on the To: line, type ^t (the ^ character means use the "Control" key).

2. You should see two listings -- one for your existing personal addressbook and the other is the nickname you gave the CU directory in the configuration settings. Move your cursor to the CU directory and hit enter (or hit return).

3. A prompt will appear at the bottom of the screen. Type in the name or partial name of the person you want to search for, and hit enter (or hit return). For more common names, enter more information to narrow the search.

4. If the search returns the right person, type (s)elect or simply hit enter (or hit return), and the name and address will be added to the recipients of your e-mail. If the search returns a list of names, scroll down until you highlight the correct name, and then hit enter (or hit return) to add that person.

5. Continue this procedure until you have added all the recipients of your message.
