Using and Managing E-mail Lists—Managing Lists

Managing Lists - Information for List Owners

Throughout this document, anything presented as word means you should substitute word with your particular information.  For example, in this line:

subscribe listname first lastname

You would substitute listname with the real name of the list you want to join and substitute first lastname with your first name and last name. Important: Do not actually italicize any commands you send to ListProc.

In addition to the commands listed on Common Commands, list owners have the ability to manage the list they own. For example, a list owner can add and remove users from the list by sending commands to listproc@lists.colorado.edu, including the list password where necessary. The general syntax is (all on one line):

where command is the actual command, such as add or delete, listname is the real name of the list, password is the list owner's password, and arguments is any additional information needed to complete each command.

Adding Subscribers

Here is how a list owner would add a subscriber to the bungee list (assuming that the password for the list is B0oingg):

When issuing the add command, remember these tips:

  • The entire command must be on one line. That is, you must type the whole command without hitting <ENTER>.
  • The subscriber's address must be entered exactly as it appears in his or her outbound email. For example, if Chip Buffalo's outbound email identifies him as buffaloc@colorado.edu, not Chip.Buffalo@colorado.edu, you must enter the address as buffaloc@colorado.edu or he will not be able to use the list (NOTE: case does not matter).
  • You must include the @colorado.edu portion of the e-mail address.
  • Whenever possible, let people subscribe themselves to lists rather than adding them manually, since self-subscription is easier and generally more effective. Instructions for self-subscription.

Removing Subscribers

To remove someone from a list, issue the command to listproc@lists.colorado.edu like so (all on one line):

The following example removes Chip Buffalo from the bungee list (all on one line):

Note: The delete command does not require the person's name as does the add command.

Changing List Settings

List owners are also able to change the list configuration settings. There are numerous configuration options, all of which can be changed by sending a command to listproc@lists.colorado.edu in this format (all on one line):

The word option is replaced with the actual option you want to change, and argument is replaced with additional information you must supply to complete the command, if any. For example, if you wanted to change the list password after a former list owner has left, you would issue the command like this (all on one line):

Remember to replace the italicized words in the command above with the actual information, such as the real name of your list and real passwords. For our sample list, bungee, the command might look like (all on one line):

A partial list of options is included here:

archive, no-archive, closed-subscriptions, open-subscriptions, digest, no-digests, message-limit, no-message-limit, moderated-edit, moderated-no-edit, unmoderated, reply-to-list, reply-to-sender, reply-to-omitted, etc.

To see all list configuration options, send Listproc the command help. To review the current option settings for a list you own or manage, send this command (all on one line):

Changing List Ownership

To add a new list owner or remove yourself as owner of a list, send the appropriate command to listproc@lists.Colorado.edu.

Add new owner (all on one line):

Remove old owner (all on one line):

Of course replacing the italicized items with the real information. Both commands can be sent, each on one line, in the same email message to Listproc. Be sure to add the new owner before removing yourself.
