Instructions for Configuring E-Mail Clients for Authenticated SMTP

ITS Help Documents >> ITS E-mail and Calendar Services Documentation >> Authenticated SMTP

Overview

Setting up authenticated SMTP is a one-time configuration change you will make to your e-mail client. Use the instructions below that are for your e-mail client.

Problems Sending Messages After Configuration
If you have problems sending messages after configuring your e-mail program for authenticated SMTP, check the instructions over to make sure you followed all the steps. If it still doesn't work it may be because you are running an antivirus program such as Norton (click here for information about Norton). These commercial antivirus programs have an outbound e-mail scanner that breaks authenticated SMTP. ITS recommends that if you know how to disable the outbound e-mail scanner feature that you do so, do not disable antivirus protection. You can also uninstall your commercial antivirus software and install no-cost CUantivirus. CUantivirus will not inhibit the sending of authenticated e-mail. More information about CUantivirus is available at www.colorado.edu/its/security/antivirus. ITS strongly urges faculty, staff, and students to run antivirus software. For further information or assistance turning off the outbound e-mail scanner contact the IT Service Center, or your departmental CSR.

Commercial Internet Service Providers Customers
If you are experiencing problems sending mail from your home commercial ISP (Comacast, Qwest, etc.), try using SMTP port number 587 instead of 25, when configuring your e-mail program.
