Windows SSH Secure Shell Tunnel for FTP (or publish) tools

To use these instructions it is necessary to download and install SSH Secure Shell for Windows. If you haven't downloaded this application, do so now:

SSH Download
SSH Communications Window Client (Version 3.2.9, which includes support for pass-thru printing)

The CU-Boulder campus has started an important security initiative called Encrypted Authentication. This initiative requires all computer users to enable secure connections to ITS servers. This practical and secure step encrypts CU login names and passwords every time a connection is made to an ITS server, thus protecting the CU-Boulder computing community from unknowingly sharing their login names and passwords. To read more about this initiative, go to the Encrypted Authentication web page.

Many web page creators enjoy using the built-in FTP or publishing function that their web page creation application has. This includes programs like Dreamweaver, Netscape Composer, and Microsoft Frontpage. CU-Boulder web page creators can now protect their login name and passwords while still using the built-in FTP or publishing function of their web page creation application. To make a secure connection, the built-in FTP or publish function will have to run through a Windows "tunnel" program called SSH (Secure Shell).

The following instructions will illustrate how to use SSH and how to couple it with your preferred FTP or publishing tool.

1. Launch SSH shell for windows from the Programs menu or from a shortcut on your desktop:

The following window will appear:

2. Click on the Profiles button and select Edit Profile.

3. Select the host to which you will be transferring files.

4. Click on the Tunneling tab.

5. Click on the Add button. The following window will appear:

6. Enter the information as shown below:

7. Click on the OK button to return on the Profiles window.

8. Click on the OK button to close the Profile window.

9. Next connect to the server by clicking on the Profiles drop down menu and selecting the server you wish to connect to.

10. At this point you should be able to configure your application (for example, Dreamweaver) to connect to Localhost rather than the host name. Your ftp data will then be sent though the ssh tunnel to the server.

How does this tunnel work?

Read about how this tunnel works with your preferred FTP or publishing tool to provide a secure connection at www.colorado.edu/its/docs/authenticate/sshtunnelexp.html
