Improve E-mail Security with SSL—Windows Outlook Express 6.0

Outlook Express e-mail client users are now required to improve e-mail security by configuring this e-mail program for secure connections, also known as SSL (Secure Sockets Layer). To configure your e-mail client for SSL involves making a slight modification to your e-mail settings. Follow these instructions to secure your connection. To read more about the Encrypted Authentication Project, go to www.colorado.edu/its/security/encauth

Configuring Outlook Express for secure connections

1. To open Outlook Express, click on the Start button, go to Programs and then select Outlook Express 6

2. Once the program is open, click on the Tools drop-down menu.

3. Select Accounts.

4. Click on the Mail tab, select the CU e-mail account you want to make secure, and click the Properties button.

5. Click on the Advanced tab near the top right.

6. NOTE: In the Outgoing Mail section, do not check mark the box associated with This server requires a secure connection SSL. Leave it unchecked.

7. Under the Incoming Mail selection, check mark the box associated with This server requires a secure connection (SSL).

Your window will look like one of the following:

8. Click OK.

9. Click the Close button to close the Internet Accounts window.

10. Now test what you have done by sending and receiving e-mail. You can do this by composing an e-mail to yourself, sending the e-mail, and checking for new messages. If this process runs successfully you have properly configured this e-mail client for secure connections.

11. If you run into errors while checking or sending mail, go through steps 1-10 to verify the configuration changes you have made.

12. Congratulations! Your e-mail client should now be set for secure connections (SSL).
