  Improve E-mail Security with SSL—Windows XP Outlook
 

Outlook XP e-mail client users are now required to improve e-mail security by configuring this e-mail program for secure connections, also known as SSL (Secure Sockets Layer). To configure your e-mail client for SSL involves making a slight modification to your e-mail settings. Follow these instructions to secure your connection. Configuring Outlook XP for secure connections

1. To get started, open Outlook by clicking on the Start buton and going to Programs (or All Progams). Then select Microsoft Outlook.

2. Once Outlook is open, click on the Tools drop-down menu.

3. Select E-mail Accounts....

4. Select View or Change Existing Accounts

5. Click the Next button.

6. Select the CU e-mail account you'd like to make secure and click the Change... button.

7. The window that opens will look like one of the following:

8. Click on More Settings... button

9. In the window that opens, click on the Advanced tab.

10. Under the Incoming server selection, check mark the box associated with This server requires a secure connection (SSL).

Your window will look like one of the following:

11. NOTE: In the Outgoing Mail section, do not check mark the box associated with This server requires a secure connection SSL. Leave it unchecked.

12. Click OK.

13. Now test what you have done by sending and receiving e-mail. You can do this by composing an e-mail to yourself, sending the e-mail, and checking for new messages. If this process runs successfully you have properly configured this e-mail client for secure connections. Note: you may get a warning about a server certificate. If so, just click yes to continue.

14. If you run into errors while checking or sending mail, go through steps 1-13 to verify the configuration changes you have made.

15. Congratulations! Your e-mail client should now be set for secure connections (SSL).
