  Improve E-mail Security with SSL——Windows Eudora 5.1

WINDOWS 98 USERS - SPECIAL NOTE: Currently, Windows 98 users cannot connect to buffmail using Eudora because of compatability issues that are being researched and addressed. For the time being, we recommend that Eudora users on Windows 98 wait until a solution has been determined before migrating to buffmail. This problem only occurs with Windows 98 and Eudora.

You can also contact the IT Service Center at 303-735-HELP (4357) and put your name on a list that will notify you when this problem has been fixed. IT Service Center: 303-735-HELP (4357)

Configuring Eudora 5.1 for secure connections

1. To open Eudora, click on the Start button, go to Programs and then select Eudora.

2. Now that Eudora is open, select the Tools drop-down menus from the toolbar.

3. Click on Options.

4. In the Options window that has opened, click to highlight the category called Checking Mail.

5. Toward the bottom of this window you will see a drop-down menu under the option Secure Sockets when Receiving.

6. Click the drop-down menu and select Required, Alternate Port.

7. Next, scroll down in the Category list on the left-hand side of the window, and click to highlight Advanced Network.

8. In the text field labeled Network buffer size, type in 8192.

9. Click OK to close the Options window.

10. Now test what you have done by sending and receiving e-mail. You can do this by composing an e-mail to yourself, sending the e-mail, and checking for new messages. If this process runs successfully you have properly configured Eudora for secure connections.

11. If you run into errors while checking or sending mail, go through steps 1-10 to verify the configuration changes you have made.

12. If you get a Certificate Error, open the Options window again. Click to highlight Checking Mail. In this window, click on Last SSL Info. The certificate in question should show up near the top with a skull and crossbones icon next to it. Select the certificate and click Add to trusted.

13. Congratulations! Eudora 5.1 should now be set for secure connections (SSL).
