Anonymous Discussion Postings

  • Description: When a student or instructor posts a message in a topic that was created with the "Authors are anonymous to Students" option selected, section instructors cannot see the author either. The wording of the option implies that instructors should see the names of authors. The online help also indicates that the Instructor should see the names of the authors.
  • Workaround: None at this time.
  • Resolution: Blackboard is aware of this issue and working on a solution.
  • Last Update: October 18, 2007

Assignment Grade Form Not Visible

  • Description: Grade form associated with an assignment is not visible to students until after they submit their assignment.
Impact: Students are not able to view the grade form that states the expectations of the assignment prior to submitting the assignment.
  • Workaround:  Faculty will need to communicate these expectations in a separate file or other format as it cannot be viewed in the assignment tool prior to a student submission.

  • Resolution:Blackboard has been notified of this issue and they are working on a solution.
  • Last Update: August 16, 2007

CULearn Sluggishness

  • Description: CULearn may run slowly at times.
  • Impact: It takes you longer to complete any task on CULearn during these times.
  • Workaround: Because some slowness with CULearn can be do to factors on a user's computer. Examples include having multiple versions of Java loaded on your computer, having a slow network connection, using an unsupported browser or version of Java. Run the browser check tool and follow the onscreen information to resolve the issues identified. Be sure to scroll down to the bottom of the report provided when you do the browser check.
    • Other slowness can be caused by factors on the CULearn service. ITS is monitoring the performance of the CULearn service and taking steps to remedy performance problems. Please report any slowness you encounter to our 5-HELP call center or at help@colorado.edu. Please provide as many details you can about when the slowness occurred and what computer system, and browser version and java version if possible.

Grades Don't Appear

  • Description: In some situations, grades uploaded from a .csv file do not appear in the CULearn grade book.
  • Impact: Instructors and students can't view grades.
  • Resolution: One cause for this situation is that the default behavior of CULearn is to not display new columns of data. Select "View All" columns in the grade book to view recently updated columns.
  • Last Update: April 24, 2007

Grade Upload Error

  • Description: In some situations, when grades are uploaded into the grade book via a .csv file, CULearn returns an error message.
  • Impact: The .csv file fails to upload and therefore the grades are not inserted into the grade book.
  • Resolution:
    • Download a .csv file from the grade book. Let's call this File B.
    • Let's call the file that didn't upload properly, File A.
    • Copy the columns of grades you want to include in the CULearn grade book from your File A into File B
    • Upload File B into your grade book. Instructions on uploading files into the grade book.

CULearn Feature Change Requests

TA Grade Book Export

  • Description:  TAs do not have the "Export to Spreadsheet" button in the grade book.
  • Impact:  TAs do not have the ability to export the grade book.
  • Workaround:  Instructor of record needs to request that the TA be given full instructor permissions (documentation incorrectly says TAs should have same privileges as instructors).
  • Last Update: October 18, 2007

Student IDs in Grade Book

  • Description: Student IDs no longer appear in the grade book.
  • Impact: In larger sections, faculty members do not have the student ID field available to them to verify that the grades they are assigning to a student are going to the correct student. They are able to see first name, last name, and username for verification.
  • Impact: When using clickers, some students register their clickers with their student ID. Faculty teaching those students may have difficulty uploading clicker results into their grade book.
  • Workaround: It is possible to upload the student ID numbers manually into the gradebook. For more information on how to upload those files, contact 303-735-4357 (5-HELP) or help@colorado.edu.
  • Last Update: April 24, 2007

Setting Quiz Response Format

  • Description: The quiz tool does not allow an instructor to set up a common format for responses (i.e. A, B, C, D responses all being the same). Each set of response formats have to be manually entered.
  • Impact: When instructors create a quiz, each question has to be re-typed by hand.
  • Workaround: It is possible to export a partially-completed quiz and then re-import that quiz, thus giving you twice as many quiz questions as before. Instructors can then edit the newly imported questions rather than typing them manually.
  • Workaround: Instructors can also take one quiz question and complete a "save as" function on that question, thus creating a duplicate question. In this manner, a series of questions can be created with the same format.
  • Resolution: BlackBoard has been notified of this problem and they are working on a solution.
  • Last Update: April 24, 2007

Withdrawn Students in Grade Book

  • Description: Withdrawn students are not removed from the CULearn grade book.
  • Impact: Students withdraw, and they are assigned a grade of W in SIS. Faculty members can still see these students in their grade book. Those students' grades impact the course statistics.
  • Resolution: An instructor can deny access to a withdrawn student or call 303-735-4357 (5-HELP) or send a message to help@colorado.edu to request that the students be removed manually from the course grade book.
  • Last Update: August 14, 2007

Paging Through Grade Book

  • Description: When paging through a large grade book, faculty are only able to page by the number of records in the display. That is page1, page 2, page 3, etc. Faculty members would like to page alphanumerically. That is, page AA - AF, page AG - AZ, page BA-BZ, etc.
  • Impact: It takes faculty members longer to find a student in the grade book in a large class.
  • Workaround: Choose to show all the students in the grade book. Then sort by last name.
  • Resolution: Blackboard has received this as a feature request.

Resolved Issues

Semi-colon & Ampersand in Content Item Descriptions: Issue Resolved

  • Description: When a semi-colon or ampersand (; or &) is entered as description text in any type of course content, and a link to that content is placed in the course content tool, the content links will not display correctly.
  • Impact:
    • If the text contains a semi-colon...
      • in the Build tab, that row of content and anything after it does not appear
      • in the Student View tab and the view that students themselves see, that content item's description is not displayed and all subsequent content items do not appear
    • If the text contains an ampersand...
      • in the Build and Student View tabs, and in the view a student sees, the ampersand and the description text that follows it does not appear
  • Workaround: Replace or delete the semi-colons and ampersands to see the full descriptive text in all views.  Alternatively, from the "Page Options" drop-down list on the right side of the main window, select "Go To Power View."  All content links will be visible in the Power View.

  • Workaround: If you are using Internet Explorer and you have a hyper-threaded version of Java enabled. And if your version of Java is above 1.5.0.7, you can turn off the hyper-threaded setting for Java. Or if that is not something you can easily do, you can also change your Windows view from Windows XP to Classic.

  • Last Update: August 14, 2007

Slow Graphic Load: Issue Resolved

  • Description: In some cases, media library files and graphics files load slowly
  • Impact: Students and faculty members give up in waiting for their files to display and so important content is not viewed.
  • Workaround: If you can convert your graphics files to PDF files, those load more quickly.
  • Resolution: Resolution: Issue resolved with updates applied August 14, 2007.
  • Last Update: August 14, 2007

Forwarding E-mail: Issue Resolved

  • Description: In some cases, e-mail is not being forwarded reliably from CULearn to outside e-mail accounts.
  • Impact: Students and faculty members who expect to see an e-mail message in an outside e-mail account are not receiving those messages. Key communication from class participants may not be received.
  • Workaround: Log onto your CULearn account regularly and use the e-mail tool from within CULearn to view your messages.
