On Wednesday, January 25, 2017, ITP Scholar in Residence, Kevin Gifford, along with ITP staff and students in the Wireless Networking Track toured the FirstNet Innovation and Test Lab in Boulder, CO. At the invitation of Jeff Bratcher (CTO), Michael Van Zuiden (Director of Labs) and Samuel Gomez (Sr. Lab Architect) led the students on a tour of the high-tech lab, which took nearly 1.5 years to complete from funding to completion. The state-of-the-art lab in Boulder is an amazing display of system and network components ready to support the future operator of FirstNet and the vendors who will deploy devices, hardware and software in the network. The mission of FirstNet is to build, operate and maintain the first high-speed, nationwide wireless broadband network dedicated to public safety, and the lab was put in place to test devices, applications and services to be used by first responders on the FirstNet network. ITP wireless track students saw first-hand the multiple wireless technologies used in the Innovation and Test Lab, and learned how these technologies will support the nationwide Public Safety 700 MHz spectrum band that is designed to keep the community and emergency First Responders safer.
Thank you Michael and Sam for the tour!
