EDF Microscopy: Metallugical Microscope
Images of a materials testing object taken with a Bausch & Lomb MicroZoom metallurgical microscope. The 25X objective of the microscope was used for these images. The materials testing object is used to analyze stress/strain properties of the material. The first two images were taken using a standard metallurgical microscope. The second set of images were taken using the same microscope fitted with the extended depth of field (EDF) cubic phase mask. The last set of images are the EDF images from the second set after digital post-processing.

Above is an in focus image of the test object using a standard
metallurgical microscope. Below is the same test object moved 60 microns below
the focal plane.

The images below were taken with the same metallurgical
microscope after modification by placing a cubic phase mask in the back
aperture of the objective.

Above is an image of the test object taken using the cubic
phase mask modified microscope, with the object in the origical focal plane.
Below is the same test object, again, moved 60 microns below the original focal
plane but taken with the cubic phase mask modified microscope.

Above and below are the cubic phase mask modified
microscope images of the test object shown in the previous section
but after digital post-processing.
