How to Start a New Student Organization

FIRST, check out our Student Organization Directory to explore what is already on campus.

SECOND, come visit us. We want to help! We"ll discuss:

  • Your proposed organization
  • The goals of your organization: it must be an organization whose educational, charitable, cultural, or recreational objectives are considered beneficial to the university community.
  • How to become a recognized student organization on the Boulder campus.

Here's what you'll need to start a new student organization:

You must have at least 3 MEMBERS to start. Two thirds of your members must be full-fee-paying CU students, which means they must be paying the full CUSG (CU Student Government) fees.

Student organizations are required to complete an Addendum to Agreement that includes:

  • A mission statement:your organization must be an organization whose educational, charitable, cultural, or recreational objectives are considered beneficial to the university community. Tips about writing a mission statement.
  • Contact information for the Student Organization Directory
    • Only official University of Colorado e-mail addresses may be used.
    • Student organizations shall update or confirm contact information at a minimum of once per year.
    • Local phone numbers must be used for contact information.

Organizations are encouraged to also have advisors. Organizations with an approved faculty or staff advisor are allowed to have a website through CU web express.

Signers:

Your organization's signers are members who have the authority to manage the financial aspects and/or events, travel, etc. It's important to keep your signers and their information up to date.

  • Your organization must have at least one authorized signer, with a maximum of three.
  • No person can be a signer on more than one CU-recognized student organization account.
  • Elected CUSG officials may not be signers on any CU-recognized student organization account.
  • Student signers of organization accounts must have their own student Identification numbers on file with the Center for Student Involvement.
  • Your signer must take and pass the Signer Quiz.
  • Need to change signers for your student organization.

After you receive an email that your New Organization has been approved:

  • Print that email
  • Come to the Center for Student Involvement to speak with your organization's liaison about the next steps.

The full process of starting a new Student Organization can take up to 4 working days from the time your agreement is approved AND when you take and pass the Signer Quiz
