About (itp)

The Interactive Theatre Project is a troupe of 14 undergraduate student actors and 2 assistant directors under the guidance of co-directors Rebecca Brown Adelman and Trenton Norman. Since 1999, (itp) has served CU-Boulder and the surrounding communities by providing professionally scripted/improvisational performances and facilitated discussions of social issues. These performances become a springboard for dialogue between the audience, characters, and facilitators. The conversation that evolves provides a unique opportunity for groups to explore complex issues while developing greater community strength, creativity and cultural competence.

How A Performance Works

Have you ever left a movie wishing you could talk with the characters?

(itp) is inspired by the vision of Augusto Boal, who created a theatre that eliminated spectators and created "spectactors" - audience members who are central to the success of the performance. (itp) realizes this vision by crafting scenes where audience members can identify and empathize with all of the characters. Immediately after the performance, the audience becomes part of the show by asking the characters questions that lead to greater understanding and empathy. The characters then leave, and the facilitators guide a discussion of the concerns that are strongest for the audience members.

Forum Theatre

Have you ever been surprised by someone saying something offensive?
Have you ever thought to yourself, hours later, "I wish I had said...."?

At (itp), we believe that practice prepares us for challenging situations. Our forum theatre performances are designed to help individuals develop and strengthen ally skills. In these special events, audience members practice challenging and stopping acts of oppression in a safe and supportive environment. Audience members leave with practical skills and empowered to act as an ally in their professional and personal lives.

Divising

Rebecca Brown Adelman and Trenton Norman are also available to guide collaboration with community group members to create new theatrical works. This collaboration, called divising, allows community group members to actively participate in the process of an (itp) show: from development to engaging in the final production.
