IN THE SPOTLIGHT People Behind the Scenes
Who keeps our university in top shape? It's the People Behind the Scenes! Meet Ryan Heiland, turfgrass manager for Facilities Management. What is one thing you would like people to know about the work you do? As the turfgrass manager for Facilities, I’m responsible for operation of the irrigation system and all related turf management activities such as fertilization, aerification, seeding, mowing, topdressing etc. I’m also responsible for the operation of the ditch delivery system that brings water onto campus through several irrigation ditches to maintain pond levels and provide adequate water for irrigation operation and aesthetic benefits. I also oversee the recreation fields such as Franklin and Farrand. I absolutely love what I do, I came from the golf course industry and thought I new the major challenges of turf management. It has been a learning experience to invent/adapt techniques to provide a high class landscape, while dealing with constant construction, events, and having so many people enjoying the landscape on a daily basis. What do you like best about being a part of the CU community? I love the challenge of getting through graduation, then having the summer to get the place put back together. It's great to be out and about the week of move-in and hear the people walking around talking about how beautiful campus is - I know that I had a small part in causing that reaction and for me, that makes it all worthwhile. What is your favorite activity/interest outside of work? My favorite activity outside of work is playing golf. Since I came from that industry I have always loved the game. Of course, you never get to play as much as you would like but when I have the chance you can find me on a course somewhere in Denver.
