IN THE SPOTLIGHT

People Behind the Scenes
People Behind the Scenes

Who keeps our university in top shape? It's the People Behind the Scenes! Meet Lori Black, AriAnne Gilliland, Cynthia McClure-Begley and Jennifer Sample, project assistants for Design and Construction.

Nominated by Project Manager Larry Hill, who wrote:
“This group of four provides project support for sixteen construction project managers as well as several project coordination consultants around campus. The current list shows 395 active projects. The project assistants keep the process of construction and design running smoothly and almost invisibly (except, of course, for large projects like Visual Arts and C4C). As a project manager, I can say that they are tireless and very dedicated, and without them, our jobs would be nearly impossible."

Lori Black:

What is one thing you would like people to know about the work you do?
That construction projects are never as easy as they look to someone with little or no construction background. It's amazing how much time and how many people are involved in even the littlest project. Not to mention all of the paperwork and rules that we have from the state!

What do you like best about being a part of the CU community?
By far, the people I work with! I work with so many wonderful people both in Facilities Operations and Planning, Design & Construction, as well as some pretty cool clients on campus, too. It's like having a big supportive family. I have never worked in a place with this kind of positive atmosphere before so it's very refreshing.

What is your favorite activity/interest outside of work?
It sounds cliché but the simple things in life are the best... spending time with my family and friends. I love to travel, decorate my house, work in the yard with my gardening extraordinaire husband, Joe, and watch old movies on TCM! My 21-year-old son is a civil engineering major at that other university (CSU) so on the rare occasion when he comes home, I am in heaven! I just got married in March so I now have two new daughters, ages 17 and 21 (psychology major at UNC). They are both smart and beautiful and very much their own person. The youngest one is the entertainer (acts just like her father) and the oldest one is my little fashionista (looks just like her father). I'm very proud of all three kids and love it when we get to spend time together!

AriAnne Gilliland:
What is one thing you would like people to know about the work you do?

What we do in Facilities Management has a lasting effect on the community around us and on the students who walk through the grounds and buildings. The environment we create here is mirrored outside the university and so we strive to create the best environment possible.

What do you like best about being a part of the CU community?
The best thing about being part of the CU community is knowing that I'm part of something bigger and more lasting than just a building.

What is your favorite activity/interest outside of work?
I have a variety of interests outside of work but I love live music and go to shows every chance I get!

Cynthia McClure-Begley:
What is one thing you would like people to know about the work you do?
We work diligently in project management so that our projects run as smoothly as possible and so that the campus community is happy with the outcome.

What do you like best about being a part of the CU community?
Contributing toward making CU a better place for the students, faculty and staff to work.

What is your favorite activity/interest outside of work?
Hiking in the beautiful Rockies with my husband.

Jennifer Sample:

What is one thing you would like people to know about the work you do?
Project assistants are not administrative assistants, we support multiple project managers and manage many parts of the projects so they don't have to. We are their first back up if they are unavailable so we need to be pretty familiar with each project.

What do you like best about being a part of the CU community?
I love the diversity of the CU community. There are so many people with different talents and backgrounds – I am always learning something new.

What is your favorite activity/interest outside of work?
I like to unwind with a good book or play Rock Band with my family.
