Visiting artists in spring 2009: Feb. 3 – Don Gregorio Anton (photo-mixed media) Anton’s work deals with the meaning of self and the spirit within and around that self. His photographs are constructions of psychological realities, portrayals of mythic fears, sacrifices and hopes. Feb. 17 – Patrick Lichty (digital) Lichty is a digital intermedia designer, artist, writer and independent curator whose work comments on the impact that technology has on society and how technology shapes the perception of the world around it. March 10 – Haiko Meijer (sculpture – design) Based in Amsterdam, Meijer is a general partner with Onix Architecten, an architectural firm with an emphasis on warm but radical forms. Their works range from residential buildings to installation projects. April 7 – Zhi Lin (painting) Lin’s figurative paintings and drawings portray epochal human history and bring to light the social truths of the inhuman treatment of human beings and the historical truths that are buried in time. April 21 – Gudrun Gut (music/electronic/digital) Based in Germany, Gut is a powerhouse advocate for women in electronic and digital arts and has been globally proactive in electronic music culture for 30 years.

Since 1972, the Visiting Artist Program has been bringing established and emerging artists to campus to discuss their work in public lectures and to offer individual critiques to art students. Hosted by the Department of Art and Art History, the program enriches academic programs and outreach to the wider community by providing a diverse mix of culture, style, focus and expertise from artists of national and international status.

Each semester, four to five contemporary artists from around the world are brought to the campus to teach a seminar class and present a lecture that outlines art works, installations or multi-media performances. The lectures are free and open to the public.

Artists working in a variety of media whose works reflect the best of what is happening in contemporary art are chosen by the program’s committee.

“The Visiting Artist Program invites artists we really wouldn‘t have access to here in Colorado,” said Valerie Albicker, program director. “The overall goal is for students and the community to interact with working artists who have strong conceptual work.”

The professional artists also critique students enrolled in the Visiting Artist Seminar Class thereby giving students a different perspective of the interplay between concept, material and context as it relates to their current work, while encouraging diverse artistic potential.

Originally funded by a grant from the National Endowment of the Arts, funding for the program is currently provided by student activity fees. It is one of the longest continually running programs in the country.

The Department of Art and Art History maintains a collection of taped interviews with artists that are available to be checked out by faculty, students and other institutions and may be purchased by the public.
