IN THE SPOTLIGHT People Behind the Scenes
Who keeps our university in top shape? It's the People Behind the Scenes! Meet Melinda Canino, administrative assistant in the Ombuds Office. What is one thing you would like people to know about the work you do? The CU-Boulder Ombuds Office assists the campus population in resolving CU-related conflicts. I am the first contact that people speak to when they reach our office. They are often upset or angry, struggling with a difficult situation and don't know where to turn or what to do. My job is to listen well and ask thoughtful questions to understand their issues. This is one part of the job I find interesting and satisfying – taking the time to listen to others and explore their concerns. In the course of the conversation I may prepare the person for their meeting with the Ombuds by introducing ways to think about the conversation and what kind of resolution they wish to achieve. People often express relief that our office is confidential. They want a place to talk about and explore options for resolution and strategies before taking the issue further. What do you like best about being a part of the CU community? I've been with the university since 1978 and am fortunate to have worked in a variety of areas (service, academic and administrative). The experience has helped me form a broad understanding of the campus structure and of the people who live, attend classes and work here. I've met students and staff from different countries and backgrounds. With its cultural and educational opportunities, the university offers a vibrant environment. It's enjoyable to see younger people starting their college education. What is your favorite activity/interest outside of work? An ongoing passion for the past 30 years has been calligraphy and the art of handmade books. |
