Katherine Erwin selected for a new position
Katherine Erwin of Human Resources was appointed the new director of the Office Discrimination and Harassment and the Office of Labor Relations on March 24. Erwin will supervise and manage protected class discrimination and harassment investigations and training programs through the Office of Discrimination and Harassment and oversee programs including employee relations, performance management, leave administration and agreement with the Americans with Disability Act under the Office of Labor Relations

Fifteen CU-Boulder faculty and staff members received 2008 Marinus G. Smith Recognition Awards from the CU Parents Association (CUPA): Carter Pann, instructor, College of Music; Ruth Helm, senior instructor and associate director, Sewall RAP; Bernard Gillett, instructor, Farrand RAP; Rob Knight, assistant professor, chemistry and biochemistry; Judy Poynter, assistant to the vice chancellor for Student Affairs; Brett King, senior instructor, psychology; Ernesto Acevedo-Munoz, associate professor, film studies; Susan Hallstead, instructor, Spanish; Larry Boehm, assistant director, special undergraduate enrichment programs; Javier Portillo, environmental services manager, Wardenburg Student Health Center; Robert Anderson, professor, geological sciences; Hamadou Seini, graduate instructor, French and Italian; Jim LoPresti, senior instructor, Leeds School of Business; Akira Miyake, associate professor, psychology; and Priscilla Craven, instructor and program coordinator, French and Italian. The awards were presented during a ceremony earlier this month by CUPA President Sandy Pennington and Distinguished Professor Kristi Anseth. The award, named for Colorado pioneer Marinus G. Smith, recognizes faculty, instructors and staff nominated by students and parents.
Sloan Research Fellowship recipients
Assistant Professor Nils Halverson of the astrophysical and planetary sciences and physics departments and Assistant Professor Kyle McElroy of the physics department have been awarded Sloan Foundation Research Fellowships recognizing their work as outstanding young scientists. They are among 118 young scientists and scholars receiving the fellowships in the United States and Canada. The two-year awards for $50,000 each are designed to stimulate research by early career scientists who show outstanding promise.
Arizona State University establishes Gilbert F. White chair
Arizona State University has established a Gilbert F. White Chair in environment and society in their School of Geographical Sciences. Billie Lee Turner, a national leader in sustainability science and a member of the National Academy of Sciences and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, was chosen as the inaugural chair. One of CU-Boulder's most prominent professors, White joined the CU-Boulder faculty in 1970 and was the Gustavson Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Geography from 1980 until his death in 2006. He was a pioneer in the scientific study of hazards and a preeminent environmental geographer.
Pamela Mills receives National Association of College Stores' highest honor
Pamela Mills, director of the CU Book Store, was honored for her 37-year contribution to collegiate retailing with the Order of the NACS Eagle Award at CAMEX 2008 in San Antonio, Texas, March 10. CAMEX is the largest education and tradeshow event in the collegiate retailing industry. The Order of the NACS Eagle was introduced in 1991 to honor individuals who have set examples for service to NACS and the collegiate retailing industry. A former NACS president, Mills is the 10th person to receive the award.
CU Colorado Combined Campaign's largest 2007 donor
The University of Colorado at Boulder and System offices combined to be the
single largest donor to the 2007 Colorado Combined Campaign, with a total of
$180,438.04 pledged to Colorado charities. This total surpasses all other
state agencies, including perennial front-runner Colorado State University.
