Jim S. H. Hakala

Who keeps our university in top shape? It's the People Behind the Scenes! Meet Jim S. H. Hakala, chair, Standing Professional Committee on Education (EdCom) American Association of Museums and assistant director of the University of Colorado Museum of Natural History.

What is one thing you would like people to know about the work you do?
Working in a dynamic environment like the Museum of Natural History here on campus is fun, engaging and rewarding. As assistant director of the Museum of Natural History, I oversee the visitor experience, including exhibits, public programs, education and visitor services. I work with some amazing, creative and generous people: our museum staff, faculty, volunteers and students in our Museum and Field Studies graduate program, and so many others around the campus through collaborations and partnerships. This museum is vibrant, dynamic and definitely worth spending some time getting to know.

What do you like best about being a part of the CU community?
Being part of the creative, positive energy that is so prevalent all around campus from the students, faculty and staff. I really enjoy being part of a community that is dedicated to education and leadership because it provides so many wonderful opportunities to teach and learn.

What is your favorite activity/interest outside of work?
My favorite activity is to hike and travel with my wife, exploring this wonderful country of ours. Other interests include reading, playing the drums, listening to music (ask me about Frank Sinatra someday when you have a bit of time) and visiting museums.
