ALTEC: Where language learning meets technology
by Melanie O. Massengale

Technology rules at ALTEC.

The former Language Lab, now the Anderson Language Technology Center (ALTEC) located on the first floor of Hellems, has blossomed into a multimedia mecca featuring an up to date multimedia library and computer labs. These resources help support traditional and non-credit language classes as well as a certification program in foreign language technology.

Kuan-Yi Rose Chang, ALTEC's outgoing director, is enthusiastic about the possibilities of technology in the teaching of languages. "Technology is in my background, along with the teaching of languages," she said. Chang has taught Spanish, Mandarin Chinese and English as a Second Language. "ALTEC's mission is to support the study of foreign languages and cultures on the Boulder campus," she said. "Computers, the Internet, and many other state of the art technologies can play a significant role in facilitating both language teaching and learning."

The Multimedia Library in Hellems 159 underscores ALTEC's commitment to modern instructional resources with its extensive collection of foreign language films on VHS or DVD available for checkout. The newly renovated facility also provides access to VCRs, DVD players, Macintosh and PC computers, and satellite based programming along with foreign language magazines and newsletters. Student assistant Matthew Troxel, a senior Spanish major working in ALTEC's library, appreciates its convenience and completeness. "The library is comprehensive," he said. "Students can listen to foreign language CDs for homework assignments or access the CD tracks on our website. They also can also watch any of our foreign language films."

In collaboration with Information Technology Services the Macintosh classroom in Hellems 145 serves as an open lab for to complete assigned class work. ITS provides critical workstation, software, and operational assistance.

ALTEC's facilities and equipment also help support its training programs, including the non-credit language enrichment classes offered to faculty and staff, graduate students and their spouses and the Foreign Language Teaching Certificate Program. Formerly administered by the Office of International Education, the language enrichment classes currently include Spanish, German, Chinese, Japanese and Arabic. In past semesters, Vietnamese, Italian, and French have been offered and ESL will likely be taught in the future. "Students appreciate the collegial, no-pressure atmosphere of the noncredit classes," said Chang. And of course, everyone likes to use the state-of-the-art technology in the labs and library."

Chang is departing CU-Boulder to assume the post of assistant dean for international, continuing and professional education in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at the University of Colorado at Denver. She will also serve as director of Chinese language. "I have really enjoyed working at CU-Boulder," she said. "ALTEC is a wonderful place to be." Interim Director Heather Beasley, assistant to the dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, concurred. "It is truly vibrant—ALTEC has a lot of energy and I am excited to be here."
