IN THE SPOTLIGHT People Behind the Scenes
Who keeps our university in top shape? It's the People Behind the Scenes! Meet Diana Wilson, program assistant to the CU Bands. What is one thing you would like people to know about the work you do? I work with the bands at CU, including the "Golden Buffalo" Marching Band, the Wind Symphony and Symphonic Band, and the CU Orchestras. People see the finished product when attending a concert or watching the marching band perform at home games, pep rallies and at the CU Stampede, but I don't think most people realize what happens behind those performances. While the marching band is a major campus presence mainly in the fall, we start preparing for the fall season no later than April of the previous year, ordering music, uniforms and equipment, and planning travel for the approximately 250 members of the marching band. In general, I assist with everything involved with the bands that doesn't include music choices or conducting the groups! What do you like best about being a part of the CU community? I love being in an academic environment and the people I work with! I can go to the library and read the latest Physical Anthropology Journal and have people to discuss it with, go to a lecture at the planetarium, and of course, attend a variety of live musical performances every night of the week if I so choose. I like seeing the changes the students go through from coming in as shy freshmen to seniors and graduate students, and alumni who love to come back to see the bands and visit CU, and want to make a difference for the future students because of their experience with the bands. What is your favorite activity/interest outside of work? I enjoy going to the theater and shows (mostly with friends from work), reading everything from science fiction to mysteries, and I'm currently extremely interested in Egyptian archaeology and in understanding string theory. To participate in People Behind the Scenes or to recommend a colleague, see the guidelines. |
