Gloria Timmons Named New Employment Services Director
by Allison Sylvest

Gloria Timmons was appointed director of Employment Services in early June, and will begin her appointment July 1. Timmons has worked for the university since 1992, all but one year in the Department of Human Resources.

"I've 'grown up' in Human Resources," said Timmons. "The people in the department are like family. It's nice to have such great coworkers and mentors."

Employment Services oversees the recruitment and assessment of applicants and classification and compensation of classified employees, and reviews requests for exemption of positions from the state personnel system. An expansion of services to include professional exempt positions is among future goals, which will allow for more centralized services to this employee group.

Timmons is looking forward to taking on several new challenges as director, including succession planning for campus departments that will face a changing workforce.

"Statistics show that approximately 40% of our workforce will retire in the next five to 10 years," she said. It's quite a large change to prepare for."

Included in preparations for that change are forming ideas for branding and marketing the university to draw new employees. Information gathered from the recent employee engagement survey will be used to guide marketing efforts at the initial stage.

"I think we can do more to market ourselves as a good employer," Timmons said. "This is a great place to work and we need to promote that."

"I love coming to work every day," she said. "We have a beautiful campus and our community is filled with many different perspectives. We have unique cultural and academic opportunities, as well as a variety of ways to get involved in the community."

Timmons has been active with the Chancellor's Committee on Women since 1999, and feels it has given her another anchor to the university. The committee works to monitor the status of women on campus and to assure justices and equity for women faculty, staff and students.

"It's another great community within a community, and is a part of campus that helps me to feel connected," she said.
