IN THE SPOTLIGHT In the Spotlight with Steven Wells, Director, Coors Events/Conference Center
The architectural beauty of the Boulder campus is world renowned and our buildings often are viewed as the face of the university. In this series, "In the Spotlight," we ask CU-Boulder building directors to give us a behind-the-scenes look at the facilities and programs they manage - along with a glimpse into their personalities. Part five of this series features Steven Wells, director of the Coors Events/Conference Center. What is one thing you would like people to know about your building or your job? When people hear "Coors Events/Conference Center," most of them associate it with the "CU Basketball Arena," but many are unfamiliar with our larger mission as a support venue, not only for the Athletic Department, but also for the University and community-at-large. Would you be surprised to learn that for every single basketball game played in the Coors Events Center arena, we schedule two academic exams for campus students? In addition, we host over 18 commencement ceremonies annually to meet the needs of area high schools and colleges. At the Coors Events/Conference Center, we strive to enhance and showcase the University of Colorado by supporting all types of events -- cultural, entertainment and athletic. Our broader mission of being a venue available to a variety of activities has provided our staff the enjoyment of building partnerships with a vast and diverse clientele and the luxury of every day being truly unique. If you have not had the opportunity to attend a recent event at the Coors Events Center -- whether it be to catch a concert by Program Council such as Bob Dylan, or listen to a lecture presented by the Distinguished Speakers Board like Desmond Tutu, or enjoy the Boulder Humane Society's annual fundraiser "Puttin' on the Leash" -- our staff would like to invite you to experience the excitement of a Big XII conference basketball game. There's not a bad seat in the house! If you could suddenly find out that one work of fiction was actually true, what book would you select? My wife's checkbook.
