CUConnect Available to Faculty; Staff Launch Set for Fall
By Allison Sylvest

The CUConnect faculty/staff portal, a new technological tool modeled on the student portal and customized for faculty and staff use, debuted to faculty in August. Staff features currently are being tested.

The faculty portal is in full operation and by Sept. 1, 884 users had logged on. Within the portal faculty can customize pages, bringing academic and personal resources together in one area. Faculty can access research and academic resources and organize personnel information. There's also an automatic sign on feature for faculty using WebCT.

Michele Jackson, chair of the department of communication, took part in the initial faculty portal testing and said it is currently being used by most people in her department.

"The portal addresses needs that other tools or web sites can't on their own," said Jackson. "They've done a good job of leveraging campus information to create new tools. There are distinctive features that meet the needs of low tech users and lots of tools for tech savvy users."

One of the most popular features is the faculty course toolkit, which enables faculty to access teaching schedules, course rosters with student photos, information on waitlists, enrollment and more. Faculty also can easily access weather information, frequently used web sites, Human Resources information and university announcements.

"Announcements can be targeted based on who you are, so you don't get information that doesn't apply to you," said Paula Vaughan, CUConnect project manager in Information Technology Services.

Vaughan has worked with Web Communications and ITS to create the university portals and is now in the process of gathering feedback from 80 staff members currently testing staff features.

"The feedback we received from faculty was extremely valuable in customizing the portal for their use," said Vaughan. "We're looking forward to hearing what staff have to say."

The staff portal will be available later this fall, after the feedback has been analyzed. Testers are accessing features that include SpeedType queries, job information, online pay advice, automatic WebCal access and a variety of personnel, financial and office information.
