Translation/Interpretation Grant Recipients
Five staff members and graduate students have been selected to participate in a translation and interpreting training program to provide enhanced Spanish translation services for Boulder campus policies and announcements. The winners are Garrett Cardon, graduate student, speech language and hearing sciences; Valerie McBride, staff, anthropology department; Jesus Negron, staff, Payroll & Benefit Services; Alfredo Ortiz, graduate student, art/art history; and Maria Ruiz-Jargon, staff, Minority Arts & Sciences Program. The training is funded by a grant from the President's Initiative Fund for Diversity awarded last spring to the Offices of Diversity and Equity, Organizational and Employee Development and Internal Communications.

Jan Whitt Receives Book Award
Associate Professor Jan Whitt, School of Journalism and Mass Communication, has been selected to receive the 2005 Mary Yodelis Smith Award for Feminist Scholarship for her book "Secret Sharers: The Other Women in American Journalism." The award from the Commission on the Status of Women, a division of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, is designed to fund feminist scholarship that has the potential to make significant contributions to the literature of gender and media. Whitt will be presented with the award on Aug. 11 in San Antonio.

Sebok Selected for International Ombudsman Association Post
Tom Sebok, director of the Ombuds Office, has been elected secretary of the board of directors of the new International Ombudsman Association. He will have a number of leadership responsibilities for the new group, a merger of the University and College Ombuds Association (in which he previously served as secretary) and The Ombudsman Association. Sebok's goals include promoting understanding among the corporate, higher education, international and government ombuds sectors and helping ombuds gain statutory confidentiality privileges.
