IN THE SPOTLIGHT Volunteering a Joy for Antonette Martinez By Allison Sylvest
Antonette Martinez is a busy woman. Aside from her work in keeping academic records for the Office of the Registrar, she volunteers her time to many university organizations and activities. No wonder she was chosen to receive a University of Colorado Staff Council Service Excellence award this spring. "The awards banquet was wonderful," Martinez said. "It was done so beautifully and made us all feel like superstars." Martinez, who currently serves as secretary on CU-Boulder's Staff Council, was recently elected as the new chair. Her term will begin in July. "I want to continue the great work that co-chairs Lisa Lucio and Tanya Patzer have done and to do some things to help boost staff morale," she said. Aside from her work with Staff Council, Martinez currently is working on arrangements for CU-Boulder participants in the Susan B. Komen Race for the Cure in October. She regularly serves as a marshall at commencement and performs a great deal of volunteer work with CU-Boulder athletics, including assisting with promotions and marketing of special events such as the ski ball. She's also a member of UCAMP, a mentor program for athletes and works with Colorado Spirit/CU Express/CHIP cheerleaders. Outside of CU-Boulder, Martinez volunteers her time in her hometown of La Junta, arranging motivational talks for middle and high school students and bringing members of a girl's youth group to CU-Boulder for tours, talks and information on what it takes to enter into college. "I want them to know that they can reach their goals," said Martinez, who is working to reach her own goal of a bachelor's degree in communications, fitting classes into her jam-packed schedule. She says she's grateful to all the people who have made it possible for her to participate in the various activities, including her supervisor Carol Mash and those with whom she serves on Staff Council. "I don't think about it in terms of being work," Martinez says of her volunteer activities. "The people and organizations that I volunteer with are wonderful, so it's really easy and fun to do what I do." For more information on Staff Council visit the Staff Council web site. |
