IN THE SPOTLIGHT In the Spotlight with David Getches, dean, School of Law
They lead major academic divisions and shape the direction and quality of programs for faculty, staff and students. In this series, "In the Spotlight," we ask CU-Boulder deans to give us a glimpse into their personalities by answering questions aimed at providing a unique perspective on "the person behind the desk." Part eight of this series features David Getches, dean of the School of Law. Outside of work, what do you spend the most time thinking about and why? The future. I wonder, plan and sometimes worry. It has been exhilarating to grow up in an era of warp-speed change. Anticipating the pace and directions of the changes that lie ahead in my lifetime and beyond is fascinating. It fills conversations in quiet times spent with my wife Ann and fills my thoughts in pensive moments of the treasured days we spend wandering, camping and relaxing in the mountains outside Boulder. The reasons are clear. First, it may be possible to shape what happens tomorrow by what we do today. Second, I have children and now eight-month old grandsons, who will live long into the future. I love them. What book are you reading and why did you choose it? "Free World: America, Europe, and the Surprising Future of the West" by Timothy Garton Ash. Ash argues that better U.S.-European relations are essential to freedom. He's hopeful but says we have to make changes at the policy and personal levels. I chose it not only because it was a gift, but also because it was an excellent follow-on to my favorite book of last year, "The Future of Freedom" by Fareed Zakariah.
