IN THE SPOTLIGHT GLBT Resource Center Celebrates Ten Years of Service By Linda Besen, Publications and Creative Services
The Gay Lesbian Bisexual Transgender (GLBT) Resource Center will celebrate its 10th anniversary in April. CU-Boulder is among only a handful of universities across the country that have a GLBT center that is a decade or more old, according to its new director Stephanie Wilenchek. The center, located in Willard Hall 227, provides education, support and advocacy around GLBT issues. The GLBT Resource Center also provides a safe space for GLBT students, faculty, staff and allies to visit. Many students hang out in the comfortable office to socialize and/or study. The center is open 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday. Wilenchek, who assumed the director post January 1, 2005, has been active in the GLBT community for over 11 years. She was coordinator of Sexual Assault Support Services at Duke University's Women's Center and director of operations at The Women's Center in Chapel Hill. When asked about the center's hopes and goals for the future, Wilencheck says, "End homophobia, transphobia and other forms of oppression," adding, "We would love to increase our funding through community support so we can expand our programming, support and activities." Reflecting on the center's legacy, Wilencheck says, "I think most recently the center is proud of advocating for issues surrounding transgender people on campus. Often the ‘T' in GLBT gets overlooked, pushed to the side and forgotten. Bringing voice to the transgender community is something the center supports greatly." The 10th Anniversary party for the GLBT Resource Center is April 13 at 6:00 p.m. in the Koenig Alumni center. All are invited; RSVP by calling 303-492-1377. It is a casual event with food and drink and some interactive activities. For more information on the center's programs and activities, visit the web site.
