Fall 2004 Campus Welcome

I know that many of you couldn't attend the Faculty Breakfast earlier this month and I want to share with you some of our recent accomplishments, as well as important information that sets the agenda for our work this year.

Faculty Breakfast Remarks, September 2, 2004

As a campus community, we have endured serious challenges over the past year, including issues related to alcohol misuse, athletics and campus funding - which I will discuss in a few minutes. We have vigorously pursued resolutions to these issues, while staying true to our mission of teaching and discovery.

Despite the challenges, good things have been happening here at CU-Boulder. We have much to be proud of, and today I will mention a few noteworthy recent accomplishments. Also today, I want to underscore my commitment to quality and excellence — with high expectations of us all, including the administration, students, faculty, and staff. And I want to highlight our efforts in two important areas affecting the academic mission of our campus:  diversity and graduate education. I also will provide updates on our initiatives related to athletics issues, alcohol abuse, sexual harassment and sexual assault, and the campus budget situation.
