IN THE SPOTLIGHT

Larry Nelson, Director of the Office of Contracts and Grants, Retires
By Allison Sylvest

Larry Nelson, director of the Office of Contracts and Grants, officially retires from CU-Boulder on August 31.

Nelson came to the university in 1970 and has been director of OCG since 1981. He was recognized in 2002 with a Stearns award for his outstanding service.

OCG's main objective is to provide support to faculty by administering funds from non-university sources for sponsored research projects. Due in part to Nelson's hard work and dedication, project awards have made steady gains throughout the last several years, attaining a new record of more than $250 million in the 2003 fiscal year. The figures for 2004 are expected to exceed that amount.

"It is the exceptional quality of CU's faculty that has resulted in successfully obtaining high levels of sponsored research funding," said Nelson.

Departments campuswide have benefited over the years from Nelson's professional assistance and he has made a lasting impact on those with whom he has worked.

"Larry Nelson has made immense contributions to the University of Colorado," said Dan Baker, director of the Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics and professor of astrophysical and planetary sciences. "He has served so well because he is dedicated to finding ways to get things done. He has set the standard for being a truly committed facilitator of research at CU-Boulder. I know that I speak for every institute director past and present when I say that Larry has made a tremendous difference in our lives and our jobs."

Richard Noble, professor of chemical and biological engineering, concurs.

"Larry is one of the finest people I've ever dealt with in my more than 20 years at CU," said Noble. "I wish him well in his retirement, but he will definitely be sorely missed."

After his retirement, Nelson will continue to lend his skills to the OCG on a part time basis.
