UCSU Update
By Monteith Mitchell

The Legislative Council of the University of Colorado Student Union approved a $400 student fee to fund campus building projects on April 29. The fee will help finance new buildings for the Law School, ATLAS, and a Visual Arts Complex, and support expansion for the Leeds School of Business and campus information technology improvements.

The fee will go into effect when the first project, the Law School, is built and occupied, and will last for approximately 20 years, or until the construction debt is paid off. It will start at $100 a year and increase in $100 annual increments until it reaches $400. About 20 percent of the revenues will be set aside for financial aid to cover the increase for qualifying students. The fee goes before the Board of Regents and the Colorado Commission on Higher Education for approval next month.

In the general elections held last month, Garrett Stanton (political science major, history minor), Veronica Crespin (political science major), and Joseph Neguse (double major in economics/international emphasis and political science) were elected tri-executives for 2004-2005.

UCSU oversees a $27 million budget generated by student fees and other revenue for the operation of cost centers, and also serves as the liaison between the student body and university administration. Three branches, an executive, a legislative and a judicial are governed by the student-adopted Constitution.
