Theatre and Dance Offers a Variety of Entertainment
By Margie Porcella

CU-Boulder's theatre and dance department is a small department that boasts large amounts of talent and creativity among its faculty, staff and students. Each year the department produces 12 fully realized theatre and dance productions in its three theatres and at least four workshop productions in the Acting Studio.

Theatre and dance productions are teaching laboratories where undergraduate and graduate students, faculty mentors, teachers and designers all work, teach and learn together. The work produced is critically acclaimed, educationally challenging and entertaining for audiences.

Last summer, the Mainstage Theatre underwent phase one of a renovation plan. It now has seating for six wheelchair patrons and their companions and its looks and functionality are greatly improved.

Upcoming department productions include the BFA dance concert "Wha-bamm," which BFA candidates produced, choreographed and will perform using CU graduate and undergraduate dancers. The show takes place Nov. 19-21 in the Irey Theatre

The play "Hot 'n' Throbbing" by Pulitzer-Prize winning playwright Paula Vogel is an unflinching look at violence, power struggles between the sexes and the interplay of sexuality and commerce in contemporary American life. The play is presented as part of Domestic Violence Awareness Month in October. A panel-led discussion will be held Wednesday, Nov. 3 following the performance. The play shows Oct. 28-Nov. 7 in the Loft Theatre.

"Peeru Gunto" is a new adaptation of the Henrik Ibsen classic "Peer Gynt" by Cecilia J. Pang. In this Kabuki-style version, Peeru seeks riches and life's meaning in a journey that takes him from Japan to America's Old West and back home again. Group and children's rates are available and the show takes place Nov. 18-Dec. 5 at the Mainstage Theatre.

For tickets, contact the Box Office at 303-492-8181. It's open Noon to 4 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday and one hour before each show.
