IN THE SPOTLIGHT Happy 70th Birthday Artist Series By Laima Giagalas, Marketing Manager, College of Music
It was 1937, the height of the Great Depression, when the Artist Series presented its first event, a lecture by famed polar explorer Rear Admiral Richard E. Byrd. In the ensuing 70 years the Artist Series has continued the tradition of bringing the world"s finest entertainment to Boulder. Throughout its history, the series has sponsored over 420 concerts. Highlights have included performances by such luminaries as Isaac Stern, Beverly Sills, Wynton Marsalis, Vladimir Ashkenazy, Marilyn Horne, Bobby McFerrin, Van Cliburn, Jean-Pierre Rampal, the Martha Graham Dance Company, and the Cleveland Orchestra. “The world has changed enormously since the Artist Series" first presentation, but the series still remains true to its original ideals,” says Joan McLean Braun, executive director of the Artist Series. “Our mission is to bring talented, intriguing, and highly acclaimed individuals to Boulder for appearances that benefit both the campus and community at large.” In 2006-2007 the University of Colorado Artist Series celebrates its 70th season and continues the tradition of bringing the most outstanding, internationally known performers of classical music, jazz, world music, and dance to Macky Auditorium. On opening night, Sept. 21, Chancellor G. P. “Bud” Peterson will host a dessert reception before the Assad Duo and Nadja Salerno-Sonnenberg performance. All ticketholders are invited to attend this special event from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. on the Macky Auditorium terrace.
