In the Spotlight with Jim Williams, Dean of Libraries
They lead major academic divisions and shape the direction and quality of programs for faculty, staff and students. Part six of this series features Jim Williams, Dean of Libraries.

Community Emergency Response Teams Help Ensure Campus Safety
Interspersed among faculty and staff are colleagues trained to ensure our safety while we work. Each Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) comprises volunteers who take a 10-week course that includes disaster preparedness, terrorism understanding, CPR and automated external defibrillator training, disaster medical operations, light search and rescue operations, disaster psychology and fire safety. The course culminates with a disaster simulation in which participants apply the knowledge and training they've received.

Athletics Department Update
Jack Lengyel is making strides in his four months as interim athletics director at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Lengyel brings expertise and experience to the university, with a national reputation for integrity and high standards of academic performance, as well as a commitment to competition.

		Asia Day At CU-Boulder March 12 Features Crafts, Culture, Music A variety of Asian culture will be on display Saturday, March 12, at "Asia Day" presented by the Center For Asian Studies at the University of Colorado at Boulder.
		CU's Charles Wilkinson To Read From His New Book, 'Blood Struggle,' At Boulder Public Library March 16 Distinguished Professor Charles Wilkinson of the University of Colorado at Boulder will launch his new and highly praised book, "Blood Struggle: The Rise of Modern Indian Nations," with a public reading on March 16.
		Huge 2004 Stratospheric Ozone Loss Tied To Solar Storms, Arctic Winds A new study led by the University of Colorado at Boulder indicates that two natural atmospheric processes in 2004 caused the largest decline in upper stratospheric ozone ever recorded over the far Northern Hemisphere.

Issues Update
I'm sure that all of you are aware of several important issues that the University is dealing with. I also realize that the flood of reports, from both internal and external sources, may seem overwhelming at times. I'd like to take this opportunity to address three top-priority issues. 


AWARDS AND KUDOS


Women's Basketball Coach Ceal Barry Retires
CU-Boulder women's basketball coach Ceal Barry recently announced that she is retiring after 22 seasons as coach. She will assume the position of assistant athletic director for student services. Barry coached the most games, matches or tournaments and the sixth most seasons of any sport in CU athletic history. Her 426 victories are the most by any coach at the school. She had 13 seasons with 20 wins, five conference championships and assorted coach of the year honors for five different seasons.

Former CU Buffalo Darian Hagan Becomes Offensive Assistant
The CU-Boulder football program recently hired Darian Hagan, one of its all-time great players, as an offensive assistant. His role will include tutoring both quarterbacks and receivers. He was quarterback for the Buffaloes between 1988 and 1991, leading the school to its first and only national championship. Following his professional playing career, he returned in the mid-1990s to work as CU"s Alumni C Club director and most recently was the defensive technical intern.

Duncan Rinehart Takes Position in Student Affairs
Duncan Rinehart recently assumed the position of research and educational program assistant to Housing Director Deb Coffin in Student Affairs. Rinehart"s position will evolve from providing assistance in addressing issues within the student education culture to providing ongoing assessment of the success of activities meant to enhance the educational environment and working as an educator in changing the educational environment. Rinehart formerly worked in Human Resources.

You may have noticed the colorful "Be Thoughtful" buttons being worn and distributed throughout campus. They are part of an initiative recently launched by the Building Community Campaign to engage campus community members in a thought-provoking, ongoing discussion about what “Be Thoughtful” means to us as individuals and community members. Go Hawaiian at the Staff Spring Luncheon, March 16
The Staff Spring Luncheon will take place Wednesday, March 16, 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the UMC Ballroom. Cost is $5, please RSVP by March 10 to 492-1188. A Hawaiian-themed menu including vegetable curry, Kalua pork and pineapple upside down cake will be served. Entertainment will be provided by the CU Aloha Club. DanceWorks 2005 Features the Work of CU-Boulder Dance Professors
This Theatre & Dance event presents the choreography of CU dance professors David Capps, Nada Diachenko, Robin Haig, Toby Hankin and Onye Ozuzu and two guest artists, Kevin Wynn and Gabriel Masson. Over 40 CU student dancers perform in seven pieces, ranging in style from ballet and modern to modern-African-jazz fusion. March 10-13, Mainstage Theatre, University Theatre Building.
