IN THE SPOTLIGHT Athletics Department Update By Vanessa Lozano, junior, School of Journalism and Mass Communication
Jack Lengyel is making strides in his four months as interim athletics director at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Lengyel brings expertise and experience to the university, with a national reputation for integrity and high standards of academic performance, as well as a commitment to competition. Lengyel, CU-Boulder's fifth athletics director, previously served as athletics administrator and coach at several universities including the U.S. Naval Academy, the University of Missouri and Fresno State University. He also has held leadership positions in various organizations such as the National Association of College Directors of Athletics, the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the College Football Association.
Lengyel recently appointed retired women's head basketball coach Ceal Barry as assistant athletic director for student services. After 22 seasons of basketball at CU-Boulder, Barry announced her retirement from the head coach position in late February. She was honored at the CU women's basketball game against Nebraska on March 2. Among other community service projects, Barry has collaborated with the School of Education on a camp for female African American and Latina middle school students. The camp promoted an interest in science and technology around the students' existing interests in topics such as health and basketball.
