The Peace Corps at CU-Boulder The Peace Corps and CU-Boulder have maintained a strong relationship since the Peace Corps' inception 46 years ago. Fifteen CU-Boulder alumni were some of the first volunteers who served during the agency's inaugural year in 1961. CU-Boulder alumni have continued to maintain a strong presence among the ranks of Peace Corps volunteers. In January of 2007, CU-Boulder became the sixth university in the nation to surpass 2,000 for the number of graduates who have served as Peace Corps volunteers - with a total of 2,052 alumni having served. Currently, CU-Boulder ranks No. 3 among all U.S. colleges and universities in the number of its alumni now serving as Peace Corps volunteers - with 100 individuals making a difference in families and communities throughout the world. These volunteers are using their education, skills and work and volunteer experience to support grass-roots development projects in the areas of education, health and HIV/AIDS, business and IT development, environment and agriculture, and community and youth development. In addition to making a real difference in the lives of others, the benefits of service include paid travel to and from the country of service, living expenses, medical and dental care, forbearance of student loans, graduate school opportunities, extensive language, technical, cross-cultural and health and safety training and over $6,000 after completing service.
