PIIE grant recipient interns at SERI Monica Ly, political science and broadcast journalism
Last year, he received an email through his fraternity about the Spine Education and Research Institution (SERI) and what interns there could expect to do. The email briefly explained that interns at SERI can get medical and clinical experience, said Alvey. I knew that clinical experience was one aspect that medical schools like to see on an application, so I was immediately interested. SERI is a non-profit organization and the internships are unpaid. However, this did not dampen Alvey's interning and educational prospects. In January, he received the CU Public Interest Internship Experience (PIIE) grant. The (PIIE) grant pays you to work for a non-profit at an unpaid internship over the summer, said Alvey. As an intern at SERI, Alvey works alongside the research director with patients undergoing research trials, collects data that SERI physicians are interested in and assists the research director in analyzing data for trends and correlations. He also works as a camp leader when SERI hosts its three, week-long science camps designed for children in grades three through 12. I lead a small group of kids throughout the week-long camp, assist in various activities they do, interject my scientific knowledge to help them learn, and excite them to hopefully pursue science further in their education, said Alvey. SERI also hosts High School Dissection Days where Alvey guides high school students through the anatomy of the human body in a cadaver lab. His next arrangement is to shadow physicians in the clinic at Center for Spinal Disorders as well as the operating room. If I had to choose one aspect of what I do that is best, it would probably be learning about the clinical trials here, said Alvey. I've learned a great deal about how trials are run and variety of data that can be collected from them.
