Scores of CU community members gathered in Old Main on May 7 for the 78th Annual Alumni Awards Ceremony. Some of the university's most prestigious awards are given each year by the Alumni Association.

The George Norlin Award, first presented in 1930, honors outstanding alumni for their careers and service to society. Recipients of the 2008 Norlin Award include Gary Jackson (PoliSci'67, Law'70), a Denver attorney who has been a strong and consistent advocate for minority participation in law; Charles Maes (Law'72) of Pueblo, chief district judge of Colorado's 10th Judicial District and a passionate advocate of juvenile justice; Jerry McMorris (Bus'62) of Timnath, Colo., a prominent entrepreneur and former head of the Colorado Rockies;and Chris Sorensen (MPhys'73, PhD'76), a Kansas State University distinguished professor and a national professor of the year as selected by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

Three professors received the Robert Stearns Award in recognition of their extraordinary contributions to the university: Barbara Bintliff, Nicholas Rosenbaum Professor of Law and director of the William A. Wise Law Library; David Clough, professor of chemical and biological engineering who conceived the innovative Integrated Teaching and Learning Program; and Distinguished Professor Marvin Caruthers of chemistry and biochemistry, who has been a mentor to numerous students and developed revolutionary techniques in DNA synthesis.

The Leanne Skupa-Lee Award honoring the most effective volunteer for CU National's Alumni Assistance Program was awarded to Robert Cohen (Econ'73) of Long Island, N.Y.

Also recognized were four students who received paid internships through the Public Interest Internship Experience - Chelsea Bridges, Anthony Ciocco, Ramon Rodriguez and Amy Vreeland.
