One of ten University of California campuses, UC Davis (UCD) has
emerged as an acknowledged international leader in agricultural, biological,
biotechnological, and environmental sciences and has similar recognition for
excellence in the arts, humanities, social sciences, engineering, health
sciences, law, and management. UCD is
ranked eighth among public universities nationwide. UC Davis Extension is the
continuing and professional education provider within the university. Extension’s Center for International
Education has become an integral element in the campus’s efforts to
internationalize and to create global linkages.
The
IEPP has a 36-year history of providing rigorous ESL and academic preparation
programs for individual students and customized groups. It has deep faculty expertise, an excellent
multimedia resource center and four computer labs, and excellent long-standing
institutional relationships, primarily in Asia.
More than half of this vital program’s revenue comes from customized and
extramural programs, which include teacher training, English for Science and
Technology and community service learning in addition to English language
instruction. Our most recent set of
programs includes Business Certificates in Innovation and Sustainability.
The
ESL, EAP and English for Specific Purposes (ESP) Instructor position is an
academic position (UC-Extension teacher title) in the International English and
Professional Programs unit reporting to the Academic Director of the IEPP.
Responsibilities:
Teach
20 contact hours per week each quarter term (year-round with four 10-week quarters) or equivalent. Teaching will
include courses in our Intensive English (core and electives), Communication
and Culture, English for Science and Technology programs, and/or custom
programs for partner universities and organizations. Supervise 2 hours per week in the Multimedia
Resource Center. Maintain office hours. Provide
service to the unit through active participation in administrative and/or
academic tasks or projects as assigned. Assist
with testing and placement of students. Participate on committee and academic
projects including collaboration to develop English for Science and Technology
curriculum, Business English curricula, TEFL, and accreditation projects. Release
time for administration or academic projects may substitute for classroom
teaching. Instructors are expected to remain current through reading and
ongoing exchange of ideas with other language professionals.
About These Positions:
We
are seeking three instructors with specific expertise and/or demonstrated
excellence in teaching four sub-fields: (1) TEFL, (2) testing/assessment
experience, (3) EST, and (4)EAP. Instructors with experience teaching science
and technology content to international students and/or ESL/EFL learners (reading,
critical thinking, research, lecture listening, academic writing and/or
presentation skills) are encouraged to apply.
All instructors are expected to teach our core classes and meet the
minimum qualifications below. All instructors will be expected to
contribute to a growing and evolving program through the development and
administration of new courses and programs.
Qualifications:
M.A. in TESL, Applied Linguistics or related field with
coursework in TESL.
At least two years full-time or equivalent of demonstrated excellence in teaching
ESL in university/ IEP settings. Demonstrated excellence in
materials and curriculum development.
Native-like fluency in English. Experience using technology and the Internet
for instructional purposes. Specific
expertise and/or demonstrated excellence in teaching in one or more of the four
sub-fields: (1)TEFL, (2)testing/assessment experience,
(3)EST, and (4)EAP and/or expository writing. Applicants with science and
technology related education and employment backgrounds and teaching experience
with English language learners, are encouraged to
apply. Preferred qualifications include language
assessment expertise, experience or professional interest in teaching service
learning courses, experience with project-based learning, experience working
abroad, proficiency in a second language, and/or international program
administration experience.
Compensation:
Starting salary commensurate with qualifications and
experience. Excellent comprehensive
benefits. 12-month position,
renewable annually, with 24 days accruable vacation per year. This position is classified as an Academic
Appointment and carries with it a full benefits package.
